The Hjälmare Canal

The Hjälmare Canal

The Hjälmare canal is Sweden’s oldest constructed waterway. From the early 1600s up to the 1970s, the canal was an important route for transporting goods between Stockholm and Örebro. Gustav Adolf II decided to start building the canal in 1629 and it took ten years to build. The Hjälmare canal is now managed by Sveaskog.

The Hjälmare canal is 13.7 km long and links the Mälaren and Hjälmaren lakes, running from Gravudden beside Arbogaån and Notholmen in Hjälmaren. The 22-metre difference in levels is divided between nine manually-operated locks.

700 pleasure craft and 200 charter craft a season use the locks in the canal. There is a guest harbour at Hjälmare Dock and a number of guest harbours on the Mälaren and Hjälmaren lakes. Vessels enter and leave Hjälmare Dock during the six-month summer period.
